The finding
Holding a standard perpetual swap position past 88 hours costs more in cumulative funding payments than paying round-trip market order fees on default account tiers.
At a standard 0.0100% per 8-hour rate, funding totals 0.0300% daily.
A round-trip taker trade on default fee tiers averages 0.0400% to 0.1100% of nominal position size.
When evaluating position costs on perpetual futures, asking funding vs trading fees which costs more depends on your intended holding duration. Trading fees are a fixed charge paid on order execution, while funding rates accumulate continuously as long as a contract remains open.
Trading fees apply twice per trade lifecycle: once on position entry and once on exit. These fees are assessed against total nominal position size rather than initial account margin. Default fee schedules differ across venues for limit orders (maker) and market orders (taker).
| Exchange | Futures Maker Fee | Futures Taker Fee | Round-Trip Taker Cost | Round-Trip Maker Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MEXC | 0.0000% | 0.0200% | 0.0400% | 0.0000% |
| Bitget | 0.0200% | 0.0300% | 0.0600% | 0.0400% |
| OKX | 0.0200% | 0.0500% | 0.1000% | 0.0400% |
| Bybit | 0.0200% | 0.0550% | 0.1100% | 0.0400% |
On Bybit default tiers, opening and closing a $10,000 position using market orders costs $11.00 in trading fees. On Bitget, the same round-trip market order costs $6.00. Using limit orders cuts execution costs on all platforms that charge maker fees.
Funding rate settlements usually occur every eight hours, resulting in three charges per 24-hour period. Unlike execution fees, funding payments accrue continuously over the lifetime of a open trade.
Current benchmark 8-hour funding rates for high-volume perpetual contracts remain flat at +0.0100% for ETH, BTC, and ZEC on Bybit, Bitget, MEXC, and OKX. This baseline rate equals 0.0300% paid per day by long position holders to short position holders.
Where this goes wrong
High funding rate contracts erase execution fee savings within hours. Holding a long SOXL position on Bitget incurs a 0.0616% rate every 8 hours, totaling 0.1848% daily. This single-day funding charge is triple the platform's 0.0600% round-trip market order fee.
Contracts outside major market cap pairs show significant rate variance across venues:
| Asset | Bybit 8h Rate | Bitget 8h Rate | OKX 8h Rate | Daily Rate (3 Intervals) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ETH | +0.0100% | +0.0100% | +0.0100% | 0.0300% |
| SOL | +0.0100% | +0.0072% | +0.0091% | 0.0216% - 0.0300% |
| SNDK | +0.0150% | +0.0149% | +0.0172% | 0.0447% - 0.0516% |
| SOXL | +0.0254% | +0.0616% | +0.0279% | 0.0762% - 0.1848% |
To establish whether funding or trading fees cost more for a specific strategy, calculate the exact crossover duration where cumulative funding equals execution costs.
Consider a $10,000 ETH long position opened on Bybit using market orders. Opening costs $5.50 (0.0550%) and closing costs $5.50 (0.0550%), producing an $11.00 (0.1100%) total round-trip fee. At the baseline funding rate of 0.0100% per 8-hour interval, daily funding costs $3.00 (0.0300%).
Dividing the round-trip fee of 0.1100% by the daily funding rate of 0.0300% yields 3.67 days, or 88 hours. For holding durations under 88 hours, market trading fees exceed funding costs. For holding durations over 88 hours, funding payments become the larger cost component.
Worth knowing
Executing with limit orders lowers the crossover threshold. On Bybit, a maker round-trip trade costs 0.0400% ($4.00 on a $10,000 position). At a 0.0300% daily funding rate, cumulative funding payments exceed maker fees after 1.33 days (32 hours).
Leverage changes the magnitude of fees relative to account equity, but does not alter the crossover point between funding rates and trading fees. Both charges apply directly to total nominal order size.
If $1,000 in account margin is used at 10x leverage to open a $10,000 ETH trade on Bybit, a round-trip market fee costs $11.00, which equals a 1.10% drag on equity balance. Daily funding payments of $3.00 represent a 0.30% daily drag on equity balance. The crossover duration remains 3.67 days.
What to do instead
Use limit orders for trades planned for short holding periods under 48 hours to minimize initial execution friction. For trades planned to span several days, compare cross-exchange funding rates to locate lower holding costs.
For trades opened and closed within 24 hours, trading fees almost always cost more than funding payments. A standard round-trip market trade costs between 0.0400% and 0.1100%, while 24 hours of baseline funding costs 0.0300%.
On standard fee tiers with baseline 0.0100% 8-hour funding rates, funding costs exceed round-trip market fees after approximately 3.7 days (88 hours). On lower-fee exchanges or maker orders, funding exceeds trading fees in 1.3 to 2 days.
Limit orders lower your entry and exit execution fees but have no impact on funding rates. Funding payments are set by contract order book balance and apply equally regardless of order type used to enter the trade.
Volatile contracts experience heavy directional position skew, driving funding rates above the baseline 0.0100% rate per interval. For instance, holding SOXL on Bitget incurs a daily funding rate of 0.1848%, which exceeds round-trip market execution fees in under 8 hours.
