Exchange CSV exports list isolated trades but omit fee adjustments and cross-venue cost basis tracking required for accurate tax reporting.
Exchange raw CSV exports misreport net taxable gain by treating gross trading profits separately from execution fees and funding payments, creating basis errors up to the full venue fee rate spread of 0.00035 per trade. Taxable events occur upon asset disposal, position closure, asset swaps, or receipt of funding yields. Rules vary by jurisdiction, and this analysis does not constitute tax advice. When a position closes, taxable gain equals gross proceeds minus acquisition cost basis. Cost basis includes the original purchase price plus allowable transaction fees.
A taxable event occurs when a position realizes gain or loss, or when collateral converts between assets. Tax authorities generally categorize four specific triggers:
The taxable gain equation depends on cost basis: Taxable Gain = Gross Disposal Proceeds — Cost Basis Cost Basis = Acquisition Price + Allowable Entry Fees
When a trader enters a futures taker order on Bybit, the transaction fee rate is 0.00055. On MEXC, the futures taker fee rate is 0.00020. Adding the entry fee rate of 0.00055 to the acquisition basis reduces subsequent net taxable gains. If an exchange export logs fees in a secondary fee ledger rather than attaching them to the position trade fill, software relying on raw exports calculates taxable gain using gross entry price alone.
Raw CSV exports generated by exchange user interfaces are internal operational logs. They do not calculate tax liability. Three primary tracking errors occur when relying on unadjusted CSV exports.
Exchanges operate isolated ledgers. Transferring collateral from OKX to Bitget breaks the historical cost basis chain. The receiving exchange CSV records a deposit of collateral at zero acquisition cost or at the market price upon arrival. If disposed of later, the full disposal value appears as a taxable gain without deducting the original purchase price.
Funding rates adjust position balances every 8 hours. On BTC, the 8-hour rate is +0.0030% on OKX, +0.0055% on Bitget, +0.0085% on MEXC, and +0.0100% on Bybit. Payers of funding incur a cost, while receivers take income. Raw exports frequently log positive funding payments as income events while failing to adjust the cost basis of the open position or treat negative funding payments as deductible expenses.
Trading fees alter net returns. Comparing default spot taker fees shows Bitget at 0.0010, Bybit at 0.0010, OKX at 0.0010, and MEXC at 0.0005. For futures takers, Bybit charges 0.00055 while MEXC charges 0.00020. A trader executing spot conversion into collateral and subsequent futures entry incurs spot taker plus futures taker fees.
| Exchange | Spot Maker Fee | Spot Taker Fee | Futures Maker Fee | Futures Taker Fee | BTC 8h Funding Rate |
| Bitget | 0.0010 | 0.0010 | 0.00020 | 0.00030 | +0.0055% |
| Bybit | 0.0010 | 0.0010 | 0.00020 | 0.00055 | +0.0100% |
| MEXC | 0.0000 | 0.0005 | 0.00000 | 0.00020 | +0.0085% |
| OKX | 0.0008 | 0.0010 | 0.00020 | 0.00050 | +0.0030% |
Assume execution of a position entry and exit on Bybit versus MEXC under taker rates.
Bybit taker round-trip fee fraction: 0.00055 entry + 0.00055 exit = 0.00110 total fee fraction
MEXC taker round-trip fee fraction: 0.00020 entry + 0.00020 exit = 0.00040 total fee fraction
Fee basis difference between Bybit and MEXC: 0.00110 — 0.00040 = 0.00070 total fee fraction
For funding calculations, long positions on BTC pay funding across three 8-hour intervals per day:
Bybit daily BTC funding rate: 3 * 0.0100% = +0.0300% per day
OKX daily BTC funding rate: 3 * 0.0030% = +0.0090% per day
Daily funding rate spread between Bybit and OKX: 0.0300% - 0.0090% = 0.0210% per day
| Asset | Venue | 8h Funding Rate | Spread per 8h | 24h Volume |
| ETH | OKX | +0.0056% | 0.0044% | 6,494,273,355 |
| ETH | Bybit | +0.0100% | 0.0044% | 6,494,273,355 |
| SOL | OKX | +0.0010% | 0.0090% | 1,576,902,499 |
| SOL | Bybit | +0.0100% | 0.0090% | 1,576,902,499 |
| XAU | Bybit | +0.0000% | 0.0102% | 524,486,359 |
| XAU | OKX | +0.0102% | 0.0102% | 524,486,359 |
If an exchange export fails to add the 0.00110 round-trip fee fraction to position acquisition costs on Bybit, or omits the 0.0300% daily funding debit from realized PnL calculations, reported taxable gains overstate actual net profit by 0.00110 plus 0.0300% per day held.
Relying on raw exchange exports creates tax overpayment or audit exposure:
Reconciling cost basis requires unified transaction mapping across all wallet addresses and exchanges rather than relying on individual CSV downloads.
