Coinbase vs Kraken: CFTC Lets Coinbase Clear Its Own Derivatives

2026-09-29

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved Coinbase to launch Coinbase Clearing LLC. It will be a derivatives clearing organization based in the US and owned by Coinbase. Cointelegraph reported the approval on Sep 29, 2026.

Kraken has already done something similar. In May, Kraken's parent company acquired Bitnomial, which included a CFTC-regulated exchange, a clearinghouse and a brokerage. With this approval, both Coinbase and Kraken now have their own US derivatives infrastructure instead of relying on an outside firm.

The report does not say when Coinbase Clearing LLC will start operating or which products it will clear. It also does not give any fees or terms. Those details are not yet known.

For someone already holding a perpetual position on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX, this news changes nothing directly. The approval covers a US clearinghouse owned by Coinbase, and none of those four exchanges are named in the story. Funding rates, fees and liquidity on those venues are not affected by anything reported here.
