Helped pass GENIUS, kept a stake that profited: WSJ on Bo Hines

2026-10-15

Bo Hines was a crypto adviser to US President Donald Trump and later went to work for the stablecoin issuer Tether. The Wall Street Journal reported that while he was still at the White House, he kept a stake in a company he had co-founded.

According to the report, that company gained from the passage of the GENIUS stablecoin bill, which Hines helped pass. Cointelegraph covered the Journal's reporting on Oct 15, 2026, in an article by staff writer Turner Wright.

The coverage leaves several things out. It does not name the company. It does not say how much the company made from the bill. It does not include any reply from Hines. Each of these claims comes from the Journal's reporting and is presented as reported, not as proven.

For someone already holding a perpetual position on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX, this changes nothing directly. The story is about one person's business ties and the bill. It reports no change to funding rates, trading fees or liquidity on any of these exchanges, and no change to how they handle stablecoins.
