The Ethereum Foundation has launched zkAPI. It is a system for paying for AI models and other metered APIs without revealing who is paying. The Foundation built it with the Open Anonymity Project, an open-source AI privacy effort. It announced the launch in a blog post on Thursday and said the system is live on Ethereum mainnet.
Users first put funds into a vault on Ethereum. They then approve each spend with a zero-knowledge proof. Because of this, neither the API provider nor the payment server can tie any request to the person who paid for it.
zkAPI puts into practice a design that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Davide Crapis, who leads dAI at the Ethereum Foundation, published in February. The report does not say how many people use it, what it costs or which AI providers accept it.
If you already hold a perpetual position on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX, this changes nothing directly. The report covers payments for APIs, not derivatives trading. It says nothing about ETH prices, funding rates, trading fees or exchange liquidity, so as reported it has no effect on what an open position costs to hold.
