The finding
Funding rate arbitrage nets 0.0294% daily on Bybit BTC perps at a 0.0098% per 8h rate, but taker entry fees take 0.1550% upfront, requiring 5.27 days just to cover initial execution costs.
Cash-and-carry strategy pairs long spot with a short perpetual futures position.
Price movements do not affect net equity when position sizes match exactly.
Net returns depend entirely on fee tiers, funding duration, and margin management.
Funding rate arbitrage isolates cash flow by pairing a long spot purchase with an equivalent short perpetual futures position. In cash-and-carry funding rate arbitrage, the position earns positive funding payments when market participants pay short holders to maintain long leverage.
When funding is positive, the long trader on perpetual contracts pays the short holder every eight hours. Because the trader holds equal nominal values in spot assets and short futures, price increases on the spot asset cancel losses on the short perpetual contract. Price decreases on spot generate gains on the short contract.
The position is market-neutral regarding delta, meaning directional price volatility does not change total account value. However, capital is split between two balances: spot assets held in a wallet or exchange account, and margin collateral securing the short derivative position.
Gross yields from rate payments are offset by entry, exit, and order book fees. On Bybit, standard spot taker fees are 0.0010 (0.10%) and futures taker fees are 0.00055 (0.055%).
Opening a 10,000 unit position requires buying 10,000 units of spot and shorting 10,000 units of perpetual futures. The spot entry fee costs 10.00 units. The futures entry fee costs 5.50 units. Total entry execution costs 15.50 units, or 0.1550% of nominal position value.
At a Bybit BTC funding rate of 0.0098% per 8-hour interval, the position accrues 0.0294% in funding daily. This yields 2.94 units per day on a 10,000 unit position.
Dividing the 15.50 unit entry cost by the 2.94 unit daily yield shows that the position must remain open for 5.27 days to recover entry fees. If the trader exits using taker orders, round-trip execution fees reach 31.00 units (0.3100%), extending the break-even period to 10.54 days.
Where this goes wrong
If the perpetual funding rate drops to zero or turns negative before covering round-trip execution costs, closing the trade forces a net balance loss.
Rates and fee structures vary across execution venues. Maker order rebates or zero-fee spot tiers reduce the break-even threshold significantly.

On MEXC, spot maker fees are 0.0000 and futures taker fees are 0.0002 (0.0200%). Entering a 10,000 unit BTC position on MEXC using spot maker and futures taker orders costs 2.00 units upfront (0.0200%). With MEXC BTC funding at +0.0100% per 8h (3.00 units per day), recovering entry fees takes 0.67 days.
Worth knowing
Choosing exchanges with zero maker fees lowers entry friction, but order book depth determines whether maker orders fill without slippage.
A market-neutral trade can experience liquidation on the short leg if price rises rapidly. Spot assets do not automatically post as margin collateral for derivative positions on isolated venue accounts.
If a trader allocates 10,000 units to spot and 2,000 units to futures margin at 5x leverage, the short perpetual position covers 10,000 units of asset exposure. A 20% price increase increases spot value by 2,000 units but reduces futures margin balance to near zero.
If liquidation triggers on the short perpetual contract, the exchange closes the short hedge and charges a liquidation fee. The trader is left with an unhedged long spot position. Subsequent price drops will cause unhedged directional losses.
What to do instead
Allocate sufficient collateral to the futures sub-account to withstand sudden upward price spikes without triggering liquidation on the short leg.
Funding spreads differ across assets. ETH exhibits an 8-hour rate spread of 0.0011 percentage points between Bybit (+0.0003%) and Bitget (+0.0140%).
BTC shows an 8-hour rate spread of 0.0037 percentage points between Bitget (+0.0063%) and OKX or MEXC (+0.0100%). HYPE shows a spread of 0.0050 percentage points between Bitget (+0.0050%) and Bybit (+0.0100%).
Assets like SOL present identical 8-hour rates across venues at +0.0100% per 8h, yielding a 0.0000 percentage point spread. When spreads between exchanges are zero, cross-exchange arbitrage offers no rate advantage, leaving single-venue cash-and-carry as the primary path for capturing rate yield.
Break-even time depends on execution fee tiers and the prevailing funding rate. On Bybit, opening a spot and futures position with taker orders at a 0.0098% per 8h rate requires 5.27 days of funding payments to cover entry fees.
Yes. High trading fees can exceed total funding collected if the trade is closed early. Furthermore, if the short futures leg is liquidated during a rapid price rally, the remaining spot position becomes unhedged asset exposure.
On most perpetual futures exchanges, funding payments settle every 8 hours, resulting in 3 rate payouts per 24-hour period.
When funding rates turn negative, short position holders pay long position holders. Holding a short perpetual contract during negative funding rates generates a continuous payout liability that reduces account equity.
