Holding SOL Long Costs $1,179 Less Per Month on OKX Than Bitget

Cross-venue funding rate spreads reach 0.0294% per 8 hours, causing holding costs for identical perpetual futures positions to diverge by thousands monthly.

Venue Spreads and Holding Cost Mechanics

Perpetual futures contracts maintain alignment with underlying spot prices through periodic funding rate exchanges between long and short position holders. Settlements occur at standard 8-hour intervals, resulting in 3 daily funding events and 90 funding settlements over a standard 30-day holding period. When a contract trades at a premium to spot, the funding rate is positive, requiring long positions to pay short positions. When a contract trades at a discount to spot, the funding rate is negative, requiring short positions to pay long positions.

Funding rates vary across exchanges because each venue maintains an independent order book with distinct open interest balances, local buyer-seller ratios, and margin liquidity. Holding an identical position size on two different venues produces different net holding costs due to cross-venue funding rate spreads.

Total transaction friction consists of two distinct components: initial and terminal execution fees charged by the exchange, and cumulative funding payments exchanged between market participants over the position lifetime. Execution fees represent a fixed entry and exit cost determined by order type (maker or taker). Funding payments represent a recurring variable cash flow that scales directly with holding duration.

Current 8-Hour Funding Rates Across Markets

The table below details current snapshot funding rates per 8-hour settlement interval, 8-hour funding spreads, total 24-hour trading volume, and the lowest-cost venue for holding long positions across six perpetual markets.

Execution Fee Schedules versus Funding Carry

Exchange fee schedules determine the entry and exit execution costs for perpetual contracts. The table below lists published default futures maker and taker fees, alongside round-trip execution costs for a $100,000 position.

ExchangeFutures Maker FeeFutures Taker FeeRound-Trip Taker Cost ($100k)Round-Trip Maker Cost ($100k)
MEXC0.0000%0.0200%$40.00$0.00
Bitget0.0200%0.0300%$60.00$40.00
OKX0.0200%0.0500%$100.00$40.00
Bybit0.0200%0.0550%$110.00$40.00

A taker entry and exit on a $100,000 position costs $40.00 on MEXC, $60.00 on Bitget, $100.00 on OKX, and $110.00 on Bybit. Execution fees dominate total transaction friction for short-duration trades.

As holding time extends, funding rate spreads become the dominant cost component. On an ETH long position of $100,000, execution taker fees are $60.00 higher on OKX ($100.00) than on MEXC ($40.00). However, Bitget's 8-hour funding rate of +0.0100% incurs $9.80 more per interval than MEXC's +0.0002% rate ($10.00 versus $0.20 per interval). After 7 funding intervals (56 hours), the cumulative funding cost differential of $68.60 exceeds the $60.00 execution fee gap between OKX taker orders and MEXC taker orders.

Position duration dictates whether order execution rates or cumulative funding carry drives the net cost of maintaining a perpetual contract position across venues.
