The finding
Holding a position in perpetual futures vs spot becomes more expensive after 4 days on BTC at standard 0.01% 8-hour funding rates.
Spot exchange taker fees total 0.20% round-trip on major venues.
Perpetual funding at 0.01% every 8 hours equals 0.03% daily, exceeding spot execution fees by day 4.
Liquidation price creates a margin floor that spot holdings do not have.
Spot markets require paying trading fees twice: once at market entry and once at market exit. Perpetual contracts charge lower initial trading fees but collect or pay a funding rate every eight hours. When funding is positive, long position holders pay short position holders.
On Bybit, spot taker execution costs 0.10% per order, creating a 0.20% round-trip fee. Bybit perpetual futures taker execution costs 0.055% per order, or 0.11% round-trip. The initial trading fee discount for choosing a perpetual contract over spot is 0.09%.
If BTC funding on Bybit sits at +0.0098% per 8-hour period, the position pays 0.0294% in funding every 24 hours. Dividing the initial fee savings of 0.09% by daily funding of 0.0294% yields 3.06 days. Holding the perpetual position past day 3 erases the initial trading fee advantage.
Where this goes wrong
Holding a 10x leveraged long perpetual position causes complete loss of collateral if the asset price drops 10%, whereas spot asset holdings retain value and can recover without mandatory closure.
Funding rates vary by asset and trading platform. Bitcoin daily volume reaches $2,294,737,396 across monitored exchanges, while Ethereum volume stands at $2,380,579,278. Higher funding rates accelerate the breakeven point where spot becomes cheaper than futures.
| Asset | Exchange | 8h Funding Rate | Daily Funding | Spot Round-Trip | Perp Round-Trip | Days Until Spot Is Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTC | Bitget | +0.0063% | 0.0189% | 0.20% | 0.06% | 7.41 |
| BTC | Bybit | +0.0098% | 0.0294% | 0.20% | 0.11% | 3.06 |

Assets with minimal funding rates, such as ETH on Bybit at +0.0003% per 8 hours, remain cheaper in perpetual format for up to 100 days. Assets at the standard baseline cap of +0.0100% per 8 hours cost 10.95% annualized, making long perpetual positions inefficient for multimonth holding periods.
Worth knowing
Executing maker orders on MEXC eliminates trading fees entirely on spot (0.0% maker) and futures (0.0% maker), leaving the 8-hour funding rate as the only cost variable.
Spot positions carry no maintenance margin requirement. Buying one asset on spot gives the holder full ownership until sold, regardless of price fluctuations. The position cannot be forcibly closed by an exchange matching engine.
Perpetual futures require maintenance collateral. Position size relies on margin, and exchange risk engines continuously monitor the mark price against the liquidation price. If mark price breaches the maintenance threshold, the position liquidates automatically and incurs a liquidation fee.
For example, a position opened at 10x leverage requires a maintenance margin floor near 90% of entry price. A 10% adverse price move triggers liquidation, permanently realizing the loss. The same asset held in spot absorbs a 10% downward move while keeping the total unit balance intact.
What to do instead
Transfer directional long positions intended to run longer than one week into spot markets whenever 8-hour funding rates stay above +0.005%.
Fee tiers alter holding efficiency. OKX charges default spot fees of 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker, with futures at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker. Bitget charges 0.10% spot maker and taker, while futures stand at 0.02% maker and 0.03% taker.
Higher market volatility increases taker execution frequency. Holding SOL on Bitget or OKX at +0.0100% per 8 hours accrues 0.03% in daily funding charges. On a $10,000 position, funding costs $3.00 daily or $90.00 over 30 days.
In contrast, buying $10,000 of SOL on OKX spot costs $10.00 on entry and $10.00 on exit using taker orders. Total spot costs remain fixed at $20.00 regardless of holding duration. By day 7, cumulative perp funding reaches $21.00, exceeding total spot fees.
For assets with standard +0.01% 8-hour funding, perpetual futures become more expensive than spot within 2 to 7 days depending on exchange fee structures. For low-funding assets like ETH on Bybit at +0.0003% per 8 hours, perpetual positions remain cheaper for 100 days.
Positive funding requires long position holders to pay short position holders every eight hours. An 8-hour rate of +0.01% equals 0.03% daily or 10.95% annualized on the position's nominal value.
Perpetual futures require maintaining account collateral above a maintenance threshold. If mark price drops to your liquidation price, the position is forcibly closed, while spot positions have no liquidation price and cannot be closed by exchange risk engines.
Bybit has the lowest ETH 8-hour funding rate at +0.0003%, compared to +0.0005% on MEXC, +0.0006% on OKX, and +0.0014% on Bitget.
