Funding rate variations across perpetual venues alter position holding costs by up to 0.0882 percent daily before trading fees are factored in.
A $100,000 long position in TRUMP accrues $124.50 per day in received funding on OKX, while the same position on Bitget receives $36.30 per day, creating a net carry difference of $88.20 every 24 hours.
Perpetual futures contracts use periodic funding payments to bind contract prices to the spot index. When a contract trades at a premium to spot, long positions pay short positions. When a contract trades at a discount, short positions pay long positions. Standard settlement occurs every eight hours, resulting in three funding events per day. Because local order book depth and buyer-seller imbalances differ across venues, funding rates diverge.
The table below shows live eight-hour funding rates across major contracts, along with the spread between the highest and lowest rate, the cheapest venue to hold a long position, and the 24-hour trading volume.
| Asset | MEXC 8h Rate | OKX 8h Rate | Bitget 8h Rate | 8h Spread | Cheapest Long Venue | 24h Volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ETH | +0.0002% | +0.0025% | +0.0100% | 0.0098% | MEXC | $8,466,182,711 |
| BTC | +0.0100% | +0.0082% | +0.0100% | 0.0018% | OKX | $5,638,720,454 |
| SOL | -0.0044% | -0.0087% | +0.0044% | 0.0131% | OKX | $1,488,087,200 |
| ZEC | -0.0007% | +0.0041% | +0.0100% | 0.0107% | MEXC | $756,936,648 |
| XRP | +0.0012% | +0.0012% | +0.0077% | 0.0065% | OKX | $493,691,819 |
| TRUMP | N/A | -0.0415% | -0.0121% | 0.0294% | OKX | $411,349,540 |
Holding a position past multiple funding stamps converts theoretical rates into direct account balance adjustments. On a $100,000 nominal position, a single eight-hour funding interval of 0.0100% deducts or credits exactly $10.00. Over 24 hours, three intervals multiply this impact by three.
Holding an ETH long on MEXC rather than Bitget saves $29.40 per day per $100,000 of position size.
Holding a SOL long on OKX yields a positive carry of $26.10 daily, while holding the same position on Bitget incurs a negative carry of $13.20 daily. The net divergence between the two venues is $39.30 daily per $100,000.
Selecting a venue based solely on funding rates ignores the entry and exit execution costs. Trading fees are charged on total nominal position value, not margin collateral.
Default published futures fee rates for available venues:
| Exchange | Maker Fee Rate | Taker Fee Rate | $100k Entry + Exit (Maker) | $100k Entry + Exit (Taker) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MEXC | 0.0000% | 0.0200% | $0.00 | $40.00 |
| Bitget | 0.0200% | 0.0300% | $40.00 | $60.00 |
| OKX | 0.0200% | 0.0500% | $40.00 | $100.00 |
| Bybit | 0.0200% | 0.0550% | $40.00 | $110.00 |
A round-trip taker trade on a $100,000 ETH position costs $40.00 on MEXC and $100.00 on OKX, leaving a $60.00 execution fee gap.
The daily funding cost on OKX for ETH is $7.50, compared to $0.60 on MEXC. MEXC yields a funding saving of $6.90 per day. Dividing the $60.00 fee premium on OKX by the $6.90 daily funding savings on MEXC shows that holding the long position for more than 8.7 days offsets the higher initial taker fee structure if rates remain static.
Funding payments debit directly from free margin collateral. If free margin reaches zero, funding payments deduct directly from the position's allocated margin, effectively raising the liquidation price for long positions paying funding, or lowering it for long positions receiving funding.
Consider a $100,000 ETH long open at 20x leverage using $5,000 in initial margin. At 20x leverage, a 4.50% adverse price movement triggers liquidation.
If the position sits on Bitget at a rate of +0.0100% per 8 hours, funding charges extract $30.00 daily from the $5,000 margin pool. Over 30 days, cumulative funding charges total $900.00. The remaining active margin falls from $5,000 to $4,100. Without any change in market price, the required price drop to trigger liquidation shrinks from 4.50% down to 3.69%.
