Cardano Foundation to EU: Don't Stretch MiCA to DeFi, Staking

2026-10-22

The Cardano Foundation is pushing back against any move to extend the EU's MiCA crypto rules to decentralized finance and staking. Cointelegraph reported the position on Oct 21, 2026, in an article by staff writer Nate Kostar, edited by Robert Lakin.

The foundation's core argument is that rules should target financial risk, not a particular technology. It also warned that if new rules overlap with existing ones, crypto businesses operating in the EU could face uncertainty about which requirements apply to them.

The report does not say how EU officials have responded, whether a formal proposal to expand MiCA exists, or when any decision could be made. Those points are not yet known from the available information.

For anyone already holding a perpetual position on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX, the direct effect is nothing. A foundation stating its view does not change any rule, and nothing in the report touches funding rates, trading fees or liquidity on these venues.
