Chainlink, Cardano Push the SEC on What Counts as a Security

2026-10-22

Six major blockchain organizations, including groups tied to Chainlink and Cardano, have asked the US Securities and Exchange Commission to say clearly that digital commodities are not securities. They want that position written into the regulatory framework the SEC has proposed. Cointelegraph reported the request on Oct 21, 2026.

The groups are asking for formal recognition. They want the line between a digital commodity and a security to be set down in the rules, not left open. The report frames this as a push for clearer crypto rules.

Several things are not yet known from the report. It does not name the other four organizations or quote any reply from the SEC. It also does not say whether the agency will include the change in its final framework, or when that framework will be decided.

For someone already holding a perpetual position on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX, this changes nothing directly. It is a request to a regulator, not a new rule. Funding rates, trading fees and order-book liquidity on those venues are not affected by the filing itself.
