Starknet asks STRK holders: quit Ethereum over quantum risk?

2026-10-15

Starknet is a layer-2 network built on Ethereum. It has opened a vote for STRK holders on one question: should it explore becoming its own layer-1 blockchain, designed to be post-quantum? Cointelegraph reported the vote on Oct 15, 2026.

The stated reason is timing. Starknet wants to depend less on Ethereum's schedule for upgrading its security against quantum computing. If Starknet became an independent layer-1, that schedule would no longer set its pace.

The vote is non-binding. It asks only whether to explore the move, not whether to make it. The report does not give an end date for the vote, any turnout or results, or the steps that would follow a yes.

For anyone already holding a perpetual position, this changes nothing directly. The report says nothing about funding rates, trading fees or liquidity, and nothing about STRK markets on Bitget, Bybit, MEXC or OKX. Until there is a result and an actual plan, holding costs are not affected by this news.
