On position holds longer than two days, cumulative 8-hour funding payments exceed entry and exit trading fees across major perpetual venues.
Holding a perpetual contract past two days shifts the primary trading cost from execution fees to funding rates. Trading fees are charged twice per position lifespan: at open and at close. Funding fees accrue every eight hours, generating three payment events per day.
Execution fees scale only with position turnover. Funding costs scale directly with duration. On assets with elevated funding rates, daily holding charges rapidly eclipse the entire entry and exit fee bill.
Exchange fee schedules establish the baseline execution cost before accounting for VIP tiers or volume discounts.

Funding rates vary by market condition and exchange inventory balance. Positive rates indicate longs pay shorts; negative rates indicate shorts pay longs.

Traders holding perpetual contracts beyond 48 hours reduce net position cost by selecting venues based on rate differentials rather than execution fee discounts. On XAU, holding $10,000 on Bitget (+0.0184% per 8h) costs $5.52 per day in funding, whereas holding the same position on OKX (+0.0361% per 8h) costs $10.83 per day. The $5.31 daily spread in funding charges exceeds the initial $4.00 difference in round-trip taker fees between the two venues.
